Asthma - Instigating Factors
Asthma is typically caused by allergic reactions. The primary triggers are air pollutants such as dust mites, animal hair, plant pollen, mold, and fungal spores. Certain food items such as milk, eggs, soy, nuts, shellfish, insect venom, and some pharmaceuticals (e.g., acetylsalicylic acid and beta-blockers) may also cause asthma. Allergic reactions involve an increase in the release of IgE antibodies, which result in inflammation and asthma attacks. However, there are several other factors that may increase the risk of asthma infections, including tobacco smoke, air pollution, excessively dry and cold air, and intense emotional stress such as high stress or panic. It is also worth noting that asthma may be genetically determined in some cases, and the risk of inheriting the disease is increased in children whose parents are asthmatics, especially the mother. Asthma may also be the result of long-term exposure to tobacco smoke and air pollution, frequent respiratory infections, other allergic diseases (e.g., allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis), and obesity.
